How to help people see the value in Performance Measurement

I’ve been working with companies to help them measure and then improve their performance for over 30 years, and every day I still come across people who do not see the value in taking the time to do Performance Measurement.

The challenge then is for me to work with the engaged stakeholders to show the ‘doubters’ why it is a valuable exercise, and encourage them to get involved.

Here are a few ideas to get your staff to see the importance of Performance Measurement:

1: Solve a Problem
Make it clear which of their problems it is going to solve. Tell them why you’re doing it and how it will make their life easier in the future. Remember it is easier to solve problems one at a time rather than trying to do everything at once – see 5 below.

2: Show them.
Tell them a compelling case study, or take a measure from their daily work and show them what it tells you. Get them involved in a discussion of how to improve that measure.

3: Measure the waste.
Let them see how much time, energy and money they are wasting through processes that don’t work well, and aren’t being measured properly.

4: Show the rewards.
Create an ROI measure of the time and money to do measurement properly, relative to the time and money that is saved or created by using measures to improve processes.

5: Start small.
Don’t try to do too much too soon, especially with people who are not fully engaged. They can quickly get overwhelmed before they can appreciate the results. Start with a single performance problem and then grow.
