How many Visions does your Organisation have?

Does your company have one clear vision? Or does each department have their own vision? If your employees’ view of the corporate vision is a cloudy one, it can be detrimental to the performance of your organisation.

An organisation that has a confused or worse, a delusional image of where they want to get to and what they want to achieve, will never reach their goals. Likewise, a company with a multitude of visions rather than a single one to focus on will be far less likely to achieve any of their aspirations.

Not sure if this applies to you? Here’s a quick test – can you recite your organisation’s current corporate vision? If you can, can you explain it to someone in less than 20 words? Do you feel connected to it? How does it relate to your day-to-day work? How does your job role contribute to the organisation achieving this vision?

If you are unclear on any of these questions, don’t worry – most people I speak to are. Here are a few tips for creating a clear, concise vision that your whole organisation can focus on:

  1. Don’t use it to tell people what you do.
It’s not a strapline. It’s not for marketing purposes. Focus on the results, the outcomes not the activities
  2. Is it complicated?
In order to keep it short has it been over-engineered to the point of confusion? Simple doesn’t have to mean three words or less, but it should be short and to the point.
  3. Is it easy to explain?
Can you explain it to someone who doesn’t work in your industry? For obvious reasons, it is advantageous for the vision to be easily understood by all of the employees who are charged with making it a reality.

The author Lewis Carroll once wrote; “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.”   Your corporate vision should help you focus on where you’re headed, then you need to devise a plan of the best route to reach it. If you don’t have a single vision to do this, it’s time for a rethink!
